What is LG's OLED.EX TV Technology and is it better than older OLED TVs

It has just been announced that LG, the pioneers of OLED technology, are set to release a brand new panel type, the OLED.EX. 

Traditionally, the self-lit pixels on OLEDs have bagged them the top spot when it comes to the best panels on TVs thanks to true blacks, breathtaking contrast and sharp image quality. But with brands like Samsung creating competitors such as the Neo QLED, LG have decided to kick things up a notch with their latest innovation. 


What is an OLED.EX TV?

When it comes to LG TVs, the OLED.EX TV is an upgrade from traditional OLEDs as it utilises new materials, algorithms and designs to revolutionise the OLED panel as we know it.


How can OLED.EX improve screen brightness?

Whilst OLEDs are extremely popular, they can sometimes be known to be a little dark. This issue has been overcome thanks to the use of the material Deuterium. 

This is where it gets a bit technical. OLED.EX panels use a substance called Deuterium which is an isotype of hydrogen in atomic structure, however, Deuterium packs an extra neutron particle. Deuterium compounds can be used to make highly efficient organic light-emitting diodes. When stabilised, the Deuterium compounds allow the display to emit up to 30% brighter light while maintaining high efficiency.

In simpler terms, you can enjoy up to a 30% increase in brightness on your OLED.EX TV. Plus, it’s also said to be more power-efficient.

How can the OLED.EX improve imagery?

Not only do we have an increase in brightness due to a material change, we also have an increase in image quality and responsiveness thanks to an algorithmic change. Whereby the TV will use an AI personalised algorithm to predict and precisely fire the lighting patterns on the millions of individually lit pixels. 

Creating intelligent and adaptive image processing which we imagine will be similar to how a smartphone may use scene detection to enhance images.

The advancements in technology on this panel also allow for a decrease in bezel size, shrinking it from 6mm to 4mm, offering more screen space and allowing us to get even closer to a ‘zero bezel’ design.


Is the OLED.EX better than the OLED?

The EX is created as an upgrade from the OLED, so essentially yes it is better. From improved brightness to enhanced visuals and thinner bezels, it’s designed to revamp OLED technology, keeping it secure in the top spot. 


When will OLED.EX TV be released and how much will they cost?

Whilst production hasn’t yet begun on this, we can expect it to start in April 2022 with an initial cost that is expected to be higher than a traditional OLED.
