When building or upgrading a PC, there’s one component that is arguably the most important, serving as your system’s foundation. This is, as you may have guessed, the motherboard. Your choice of motherboard will determine many things in your build, such as the components you are able to use, and vice versa - for example, your choice of CPU may determine which motherboard you should purchase. So, what exactly is a motherboard, and what should you look out for? Read on for our top tips.







What is a motherboard?
A motherboard is the foundation of a computer and is the main printed circuit board that holds and allows communication between your crucial components, from processor to memory. Without having a motherboard, your hard drive, graphics card, and every other component won't be able to interact. It serves as a backbone to your system, which is why selecting the right motherboard for your build is crucial. While many modern motherboards are packed with a wide endless list of features, we've unpacked the main areas you should consider when making your purchase.
Which motherboard chipset do you need?
Starting at the basics, when buying a motherboard the key features to look out for are chipsets, the board size, connectors and ports. The chipset is arguably the main component on a motherboard, as it's permanently attached unlike removable CPU or RAM for example. Chipset’s work with specific CPU generations, and pass communications between the CPU and the multiple other components you have installed. You will need to check which CPU you are planning to use with your motherboard, as this will narrow down your options. Older 9th Gen CPUs for example need motherboards with an LGA 1151 socket, while newer 10th or 11th Gen Intel CPUs need an LGA 1200 socket. It’s important to do your research to ensure that your CPU and motherboard will be compatible.
Which size motherboard do you need?
When it comes to motherboard sizing, the majority of modern motherboards come in the following sizes: E-ATX, ATX, Micro-ATX and Mini-ITX. As you may have guessed, these decrease in size with Mini-ITX being most commonly used in tiny PC builds. A larger motherboard is great for those wanting the most space for slots and ports, however, it will require a case that can handle the size! On the opposite end of the scale, a Mini-ITX motherboard is really great for small systems, but you will lack space for add-ons and there will be fewer connections. When choosing the size, you will need to consider all of the different components in your build, from case to graphics card.
Which motherboard ports do you need?
Planning on having a lot of peripherals? Keep a lookout for the I/O area on a motherboard to ensure it has enough ports for your everyday needs. You can also check the USB headers which can be used to add more ports. Common ports to look for are USB types, HDMI/DisplayPort, Audio and more- depending on what you’re planning on using with your PC, it’s important to make sure your future self won't be left short of any ports!

How many RAM slots does your system need?
RAM (or ‘Random-Access Memory’) is (put simply) your system’s short-term data storage, storing data as and when your processor needs it. Upgrading RAM in your system can improve its overall performance, and installing is easy. Many motherboards will have four RAM slots for you to insert up to 4 ‘sticks’ of RAM into your system. However, some smaller sized motherboards are limited in space, and therefore will limit the amount of RAM you are able to install. Consider what you will be using your system for whether that be working, gaming or high-intense rendering, and then ensure your system will be able to host an efficient amount of RAM needed.
Does your system have a colour scheme?
Modern motherboards come in a range of styles, from striking dark black to glacial white. If looks are important to you, you may wish to spend some extra time searching for your favourite style to suit your build. Those with tempered-glass side panel cases for example may be more inclined to motherboards that feature all kinds of RGB headers and possible effects. Prefer a more muted look? In that case, there’s no need to opt for flashy covers or heatsinks.
