DDR4 VS DDR5 Speed
On DDR4 we have 1.6 to 3.2 Gbps data rate, whilst on DDR5 we have around double at 4.8 to 8.4Gbps. In terms of clock rate, we have 0.8 to 1.6GHz on DDR4 and 1.6 to 4.8GHZ on DDR5. This means we have a 50% increase in speed from DDR4 to DDR5.

You can find DDR4 RAM sticks ranging from 4GB-64GB, however with DDR5 the max memory size goes up to a seriously impressive 128GB per module. This means you can have a whopping 512GB of memory in your PC. It is worth noting though, that this will depend on the amount of RAM the motherboard supports, as Z690 motherboards only currently support up to 128GB.

DDR4 VS DDR5 IO Voltage
With DDR4 we have a minimum voltage of 1.2 V, whilst DDR5 we have a minimum of 1.1V.
Whilst this is not a huge reduction, it does means lower power consumption, resulting in better power efficiency and cheaper running costs overall. Plus, DDR5 chips can regulate their own voltage, a feature which is usually controlled by the motherboard, which could reduce the cost of motherboards in future.

72-bit data channel (64 data + 8 ECC) on DDR4, whereas 40-bit data channel (32 data + 8 ECC) on DDR5.
With DDR5, we have a change in DIMM channel architecture. DDR4 DIMMs have a 72-bit bus which is made from eight ECC bits and 64 Data bits. On the other hand, with DDR5 we have two channels which are 40 bits wide (eight ECC bits and 32 Data bits). Whilst the data width is the same, having two smaller independent channels can improve memory efficiency, so overall we have faster speeds and improved efficiency.
Burst Length
BC4, BL8 on DDR4 VS BC8, BL116 on DDR5
On DDR4 memory, the burst length is eight and burst chop length is four, whereas on DDR5, Burst length is sixteen (BL16) and burst chop is eight. BL16 allows a single burst to access a full 64 Bytes of data which it can do by accessing only one of the two independent channels. This can improve efficiency by providing an improvement in concurrency between the two channels.
