How to Upgrade my Laptop to Windows 11

The release of Windows 11 has us all pretty excited, as it comes with a range of upgrades from snap layouts to a new motion design. To find out more about the new features and benefits of Windows 11, check out our Blog on ‘Windows 11 best features explained’.

The first thing you must do before upgrading your laptop is to know whether is it compatible with the new update. Below are the minimum system requirements set by Microsoft for your device to be compatible, but an easier way to check if your device will allow windows 11 is to use the PC health check app.

  • Processor - 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with 2 or more cores on a compatible 64-bit processor or System on a Chip (SoC).
  • Graphics card - Compatible with DirectX 12 or later with WDDM 2.0 driver.
  • Memory - 4 GB RAM.
  • Storage - 64 GB or larger storage device.
  • System firmware - UEFI, Secure Boot capable. Check here for information on how your PC might be able to meet this requirement.
  • Display Resolution - High definition (720p) display that is greater than 9” diagonally, 8 bits per colour channel.
  • TPM -  Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0.

When is Windows 11 available?

Well, the release is expected on the 5th of October, but this is set to be released in a phased approach which will be set to reach new eligible devices first and will be rolled out further with all eligible devices expected to have it by mid 2022.

With this being the case, those with older devices may notice that their device is not ready for the update for a while, however, there is a way to get around this and have early access to Windows 11 which you can find further down.

How to see if your device is ready for a Windows 11 update:

Step 1) Open up the device settings.





Step 2) Click update and security.



Step 3) Select Windows update.




Step 4) Check for updates and then click update.

If it is not yet available to you through the settings, don’t worry as there is still a way you can get early access to Windows 11 on your laptop via the steps below:


How to Access Windows 11 early

Step 1) Sign up to the Windows insider programme (you can do this by going clicking the following link to the Microsoft website and registering by creating an account). 

Step 2) Navigate to your PC settings, click update and then select the ‘Windows insider’ programme.

Step 3 ) Click ‘get started' and sign in with the same account you registered with.

Step 4) Go through the on-screen steps and ensure you have chosen the ‘Release Preview Channel'.

Step 5) When you have agreed to the terms and conditions, you will be asked to reboot your device, you must reboot it to apply the changes.

Step 6) When the laptop is back on, head to settings and click ‘updates and security' and then ‘check for updates, here you should be able to see an option for Windows 11.

Step 7) Ensure your device is plugged in and hit the ‘download and install' option to start the upgrade.
