How to Connect your AirPods Max to the PlayStation 5

In this article we will discuss the exciting new AirPods Max and how to connect them, step by step, to the PlayStation 5. The steps in this article are written specifically for the AirPods Max but they can be applied to any Bluetooth Audio Device that you wish to connect.

What are the AirPods Max?

The AirPods Max are alongside the PS5 in one of the most highly anticipated new releases of 2020/2021. Apple’s newest addition to the wireless headphone family sees an over-ear headphone that combines pillow-soft comfort with high quality surround sound, modern sound cancelling and artificial intelligence - all encased in a fun and unique design.

Does the PlayStation 5 come with Bluetooth?

Similar to the AirPods Max, the eagerly awaited PlayStation 5 did not disappoint. The console is packed with modern technology, lightning speed and stunning visuals. Despite the PS5’s amazing features, we were surprised (and a little disappointed) to find that it cannot support Bluetooth Audio devices. Luckily there is a quick, easy and cheap fix for this as all you need is a Bluetooth Adapter or Dongle that plugs into the PS5.

There are a range of PS5 Bluetooth adapters on the market from some that are USB-C, USB and even 3.5mm, but overall they are pretty similar so whichever you decide is really down to preference. There are even some that allow you to pair two devices so both you and a friend can connect your AirPods to the Playstation simultaneously. The Bluetooth adapters are readily available online and inexpensive as you can expect to grab one for less than £20.

So now you have everything that you need (Charged Airpods Max, Bluetooth Adapter, PS5), let’s get into it:

Instructions:

1. Plug the Bluetooth adapter dongle into the PS5 (this could be at the front, back or on the controller)

2. Hold the pairing button down on the adapter, on most devices a flashing light indicates pairing mode

3. On your AirPods Max press and hold the pairing button on the top, there should be a white flashing light on the bottom which indicates pairing mode is active

4. Hold pairing button until the light on the Bluetooth adapter turns solid, this indicates pairing is complete

5. Put the AirPods over your ears and test audio connection

*(If you are having difficulty hearing anything try checking the audio settings on the PS5, you need the audio output to be the Bluetooth device)

From our experience, connection was really simple, we didn’t have any issues with lag and the sound quality from the AirPods Max was exceptional. The only thing to consider with using these as your audio device is that unfortunately the PS5 doesn’t let you use the Mic on the AirPods. So whilst you can hear clearly through them, you cannot speak through them. This was a bit of a shame as the AirPods Max have beamforming which is especially designed to isolate your voice on phone calls and this would have been awesome to use on the PS5. Nonetheless, this isn't too much of an issue as you can use the mic on the controller which worked really well.
