Electric scooters soon to be made legal in UK breakthrough



This week the government has confirmed that it will soon open a consultation on how to regulate e-scooters. It is likely that they will be regulated in the same way as e-bikes where they will be allowed on roads and in cycle lanes but be restricted to a 15.5mph speed limit. There will be trials in cities across the UK starting possibly as soon as next month. There are still many things that will need to be clarified when it comes to the regulations such as should it be compulsory to wear a helmet when riding an electric scooter but it seems we have started on the path to legalisation in 2020.

The reason the electric scooters are not currently legal to ride in public in the UK is because of the 1835 highway act which states that ‘mechanically propelled vehicles’ are banned from pavements, cycle paths and public footpaths. This 1835 law is grossly out of date and UK politicians have finally stepped in to make some changes so that the second electrical revolution can continue. European countries such as France and Spain have embraced electric scooters and they have proven to be hugely popular with both commuters and casual users.

We are currently still in an electric scooter limbo but the tide seems to be turning as our government have been taking note of how personal electric transport can benefit both their citizens and the environment. We could not get hold of Greta Thunberg to comment on the latest development in UK electric scooter legalisation but we are pretty sure she would say something like: ‘legalise them now and save the planet’.
